There are many WordPress webmasters who don’t get too excited when it comes to editing their code. The more you know about PHP, HTML, and other WordPress-related technologies, the better off you will be though. You could always write and test code snippets on your computer/server. But if you plan to spend a lot of time on the road with your tablet or smartphone device, you are going to need one of these code editors:
Textastic Code Editor: one of the most versatile code editors for iPad. It offers support for plenty of languages, including PHP, Perl, SQL, and HTML. It supports SFTP and FTPS too.
Code ToGo: lets you write and run code in your favorite programming language on iPhone and iPad. PHP, JavaScript, and many other languages are supported.
Gusto: this is another beautiful application for web developers. It has a project-driven workflow. It offers syntax highlighting for the most popular programming languages.
Kodiak PHP: an iPad-exclusive application that enables you to write and test PHP code on your tablet. It has a decent keyboard with swipe buttons.
Codosaurus for iPhone: this is a FTP code editor that lets you edit code on your server. It lets you open and edit all kinds of files. This is a universal application.
DroidEdit: this list wouldn’t be complete without a few decent Android apps. This code editor is free and offers support for some of the most popular programming languages.
Codeanywhere: another free code editor with a built-in FTP client. It is quite decent for editing PHP, CSS, and JavaScript files.
If you don’t spend a whole lot of time thinking about coding when you are traveling, you probably don’t need any of these code editors. Otherwise, these tools can make you a more productive webmaster.
